Winter can be a challenging time for property owners, but with a little preparation, you can minimize the risk of damage and keep your home in good condition. Here are some tips from Marshall Tonks to help you get started:
CHECK YOUR PIPES
During the winter months, pipes are prone to freezing and bursting. To avoid this, keep the heating on at a low temperature, even if the property is unoccupied. Check all external pipes for leaks, breaks, or blockages, as blocked or leaking pipes are more likely to burst.
CHECK DRAINS AND GUTTERS
Make sure your gutters and drains are not blocked. Clean them out regularly, especially if you have trees overhanging your property. Guttering can become heavy with frozen water, and this can cause breaks and falls.
VENTILATION
Condensation problems can be much worse in the winter. Open windows and maintain an even temperature to help reduce condensation. Condensation salts can help with this problem, as can a dehumidifier.
INSULATION
Insulation is always important, particularly in winter. Ensure your loft insulation is in good condition, and install draft excluders to keep out the cold air.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
Keep items for emergencies, such as a torch, and a basic tool kit, and a few contact numbers such as utility companies, insurance companies/details, and, if you are in a managed property with us, our office number. We operate regardless of the day or hour.
